Chemical spill prompts evacuation, closure of government building in Waverly

A government building in downtown Waverly was evacuated Wednesday morning due to a chemical spill.

The Waverly Police Department was called to the Pike County Government Center near U.S. 23 a little after 9 a.m.

Pike County Commisssioner Fred Foster stated that the evacuation and closure of the building were ordered as a precaution for the safety of employees and the public.

Pike County EMA says the chemical, MECT5, is an inhalation hazard and the spill has been contained to a storage room at the back of the building.

No injuries or illnesses were reported. The building will remain closed the rest of the day.

The Jackson Emergency Response Unit was also called to the scene.
